Farm Fairs in Lancaster County
As summer wans and the fall season and end of harvest is upon us, several Lancaster County towns are host to farm fairs, a celebration of community and farming. What might you see at these fairs that the whole town seems to turn out for? Of course, there are the animals, sheep, swine, cattle, goats and rabbits, all vying for that blue ribbon. The summer harvest has been put up. Jars of pickles, chow chow, beets, jams, relishes and vegetables hoping to receive a blue, red, yellow or white ribbon. Did I mention the baked goods? How would you like to be one of the judges tasting all those homemade cakes, pies and cookies? Handcrafts, quilts, flower arranging, photography, art work and jewelry submitted by talented local residents also looking to acquire one of the ribbons. There is something for everyone to see and do, amusement rides, contests, tug-of-war, talent shows, live entertainment, baby and pet parades, and lots of food. I don't think mom cooks during the fair, the whole family is in town enjoying the festivities. The fairs run for several days, sometimes closing the main street in town because it is the location for several of the fairs. Fair season in Lancaster County starts in Elizabethtown on August 20th thru 25th, 2012, followed by the Denver Fair 9/11 - 9/15, the Solanco Fair 9/19 - 9/21, the Ephrata Fair 9/25 -9/29, West Lampeter Community Fair 9/26 - 9/28, New Holland Farmer's Fair 10/03 -10/06, and Manheim Community Farm Show 10/8 - 10/12.
